human medicines should not be administered to dogs and cats unless prescribed by a veterinarian.
Common Medications such as aspirin, paracetamol and ibuprofen are toxic to our pets and can become fatal.
Ibuprofen blocks the chemicals in the body that cause pain, fever and inflammation. This drug is found in many counter products and can be potentially dangerous especially for small breeds dogs and cats. Just one tablet can cause stomach ulcers.
Products containing paracetamol and aspirin can be toxic as well, especially for cats. Dogs tolerate them better but the margin of error in the dose is very small and should be administered only under veterinary supervision.
Paracetamol causes choking them because they alter the red blood cells change the blood's hemoglobin to a compound called methaemoglobina, this compound can not carry oxygen and results in the gums and lips turn blue.
Aspirin is also dangerous, causing severe irritation of the bowels, and loss of appetite, vomiting and depression, especially in cats, and the animal can not stand or to preserve the balance and the head is moved sideways.
Other drugs that should be kept away from cats are those containing,
phenylbutazone, indomethacin, naproxen, acetaminophen and codeine.
Keep poisons out of reach is important to prevent accidental poisonings.
